Blog 5: Buried Tools and Unanswered Questions: Artefacts That Challenge New Zealand’s Settlement Timeline

This Blog continues our examination of archaeological artefacts found in New Zealand that predate the last 800 years.
Artefact: Polished Stone Tools

Julius von Haast (1822–1887) was a German-born New Zealand explorer and geologist, and the founder of the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch. He named Haast Pass and the Haast River after himself, and documented and named many central South Island glaciers, including Franz Josef Glacier (named for the Emperor of Austria). Later, the township of Haast, two mountains, Haast Schist, and the Haast Eagle were named in his honour, reflecting his influence on early geological exploration in New Zealand. This discussion adds another dimension to New Zealand’s origin story. These migration patterns contribute to broader debates surrounding Southeast Asian migration to New Zealand and are frequently compared with established interpretations of Polynesian migration to New Zealand. Together, these competing perspectives continue to shape ongoing discussions about New Zealand’s first settlers.
During his travels on the West Coast, Haast also recorded the discovery of polished stone tools found beneath deep layers of soil and forest.
At Bruce Bay, he reported an adze beneath about five metres of soil, below rimu trees estimated to be around 1,000 years old. In the same area, gold miners digging to similar depths for alluvial deposits uncovered a grey sandstone chisel and a sharpening stone close together, after clearing large trees (about one metre in diameter) from the site.

At Hunts Beach, he described a sandstone adze with a well‑polished cutting edge found around six metres beneath an ancient forest.
These finds raise a basic question: how long does it take for 5–6 metres of soil and sediment to accumulate above a former ground surface? If the layers formed gradually (rather than through rapid burial events such as flooding or slips), the depth suggests a timespan that could exceed 1,000 years—potentially predating the commonly cited timeframe for first settlement (around 1280 CE). This is not, on its own, proof of an earlier population, but it highlights why the local burial history matters when interpreting artefacts found at depth.
Artefact: Cut-Off Tree Stump
In 1874, a report to the New Zealand Institute described an unusual discovery in Auckland’s Albert Park: an upright tree stump, with its root system still in place, found about 7 metres below the surface. The stump appeared to have been left standing after the trunk was removed by a clean, level cut—as if a tool had been used and the stump intentionally left in the ground. Just as important, the report noted that the surrounding deposits were well-layered and undisturbed, with no signs of slip material or mixing that would suggest the stump had been dragged down or reburied later.

This raises a straightforward question: how does a clean-cut stump end up sealed beneath seven metres of stable, layered ground? If the layers accumulated gradually over a long period (rather than being dumped rapidly), then the stump points to human activity in Auckland earlier than the commonly cited settlement timeframe (around 1280 CE).
The stump was uncovered during sewer excavations carried out by Auckland Council workmen, overseen by professional staff setting levels for the pipe trench. Like the deeply buried stone tools described above, the Albert Park stump is another small but striking piece in the wider pattern: finds at depth that are difficult to explain if all human activity began only in the last 800 years.
Artefact: Serpentine Stone Bird Carving
In 1878, a finely carved stone bird was reportedly found beneath the roots of an upturned mānuka tree somewhere between Aotea Harbour and Raglan. The object is carved from dark green serpentine, weighs approximately 2.1 kg, and measures around 25 cm in length. The find is notable not only for its craftsmanship, but also for what it appears to imply about contact, trade, or movement of people and objects into New Zealand.

Why the carving is unusual
Raw material: Serpentine is not known from local New Zealand sources. If the identification is correct, the stone (or finished carving) would need to have come from overseas, with commonly suggested sources including parts of Southeast Asia and China.
Manufacture: The carving is finely finished and appears consistent with the use of metal tools (or at least techniques not typically associated with Māori lithic carving traditions). If so, it raises questions about where and by whom it was made.
Style: No close parallels in form or style have been widely documented from other archaeological contexts in New Zealand, which makes it difficult to place within a local carving tradition.
Provenance and context: Because the object was reportedly recovered from beneath an uprooted tree rather than from a controlled excavation, key information is missing (exact location, depth, surrounding deposits, and whether any other items were associated with it). This makes dating and interpretation difficult.
Taken at face value, the combination of non-local stone, high-quality workmanship, and lack of local parallels suggests the carving may have arrived in New Zealand from elsewhere rather than being produced locally. However, without secure archaeological context, multiple explanations remain possible. The key questions are therefore not only who brought it, but also when it entered the region and how it came to be buried.
